How wise are we, really?
I have long thought that Homo sapiens should be renamed Homo hubrissiens to reflect the extraordinary hubris man displayed first in naming his own species as "wise" and second in continuing to behave with increasing hubris in our relationship with the planet and other species. Note that I'm not certain of the accuracy of the adjectival form hubrissiens because I have only learned Greek in an incidental way through biological terms.
I would like to think that we might evolve into a species which could accurately be called Homo humilis.
I'm sure very few people will agree with me so I wouldn't expect my proposed name to be adopted until perhaps some time into the future when our species has become extinct.
Jim Boland speaks of the stupidity of the few. I consider we have all conspired in our extinction, although some have undoubtedly contributed more than others. We have all believed in the destructive mantra that have contributed to the decline of our society and the wastefulness of our everyday behaviour, for example:
Other adjectives which could be used to describe our species include:
sapiendus: becoming wise – this name has some appeal but I think we are very late in starting to become wise.
artifex: intelligent, making artifices, and doing as opposed to being (as per Erich Fromm)
audax: bold – not a universal characteristic
bellicosus: warlike, aggressive, competitive – ditto
regis: ruling, domineering, controlling – ditto
